The NBVME Award was presented to Dr. Peter Scoles on April 8, 2015 in Philadelphia, PA. The NBVME Board of Directors voted unanimously to present this prestigious award to Dr. Scoles in recognition of his tireless efforts promoting the best interests for veterinary medicine and the NBVME. He lead the NBME team responsible for the design and implementation of the NBME/NBVME Collaboration for Veterinary Assessments. An avid sailor, Dr. Scoles received a Morris yacht jacket in addition to a plaque.
Dr. Scoles is Professor of Orthopedics and Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum Research and Development at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Scoles facilitates the Jefferson curriculum redesign effort, and serves as a member of the Senior Curriculum Transformation Group. He leads Jefferson’s study of the educational environment of the future.
Dr. Scoles has extensive and unique experience in the regulatory aspects of medical licensure, certification, and recertification. As Senior Vice President for Assessment Programs and Executive Director for International Programs at the NBME from 1998 through 2013, he was responsible for the United States Medical Licensing Examination as well as the NBME’s portfolio of specialty board certification and recertification examinations. He directed NBME efforts in implementation of the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills examination and headed the NBME team charged with the comprehensive review of the USMLE program. He represented the NBME on the USMLE Composite Committee, and on numerous working committees of the AAMC, AMA, American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Federation of State Medical Boards. He established the NBME international programs unit, and has extensive experience medical education, assessment, and licensure programs in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim. Outside the field of human medicine, he lead the NBME team responsible for the design and implementation of NBME/National Board of Veterinary Examiners Collaborative North American Veterinary Licensure Examination program.
Dr. Scoles is a 1970 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University-Jefferson Medical College 5-year combined program in Medicine and holds the degrees of Master of Science from Ohio State University and Master of Arts from John Carroll University. He is Board certified and recertified in Orthopedics, and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Prior to joining the NBME, Dr. Scoles held the position of Professor of Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and Anatomy, and Assistant Dean at Case-Western Reserve University College of Medicine.
Dr. Scoles serves as Attending Orthopedist at the Philadelphia Shriner’s Hospital for Children, and directs the non-operative scoliosis treatment program.
