The Veterinary Educational Assessment (VEA®) is a 240-item multiple-choice examination developed by the ICVA to measure veterinary student knowledge in five core areas: anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, and pathology.
Designed as a low-stakes formative assessment, the VEA offers students a snapshot of their current knowledge base in these fundamental sciences, identifying areas for further development. It also provides valuable insights for faculty by providing indicators for considering students for remediation and allowing them to identify potential problem areas that can be addressed through school-based supports.
VEA Data Workshops empower institutions by equipping faculty and staff with the necessary skills to interpret and analyze VEA data. These workshops address any questions related to working with VEA results and offer guidance on supporting students who may have questions about their individual reports.
The VEA Data Workshops cater to different experience levels, with offerings twice during the academic year:
Fall Workshops (Introductory): Ideal for new schools or new staff and faculty unfamiliar with VEA data. These workshops provide a foundational understanding of VEA data and reports.
Spring Workshops (Advanced): Designed for those with prior experience with VEA data, those who have taken the introductory workshop, and an interest in developing advanced data visualization skills.
Upcoming Workshops:
● Fall 2024: Introduction to VEA Reports and Data Sets
● Spring 2025: Visualizing VEA Data – Advanced Skills
● Fall 2025: Introduction to VEA Reports and Data Sets
● Spring 2026: Creating Targeted Companion Measures for VEA
These workshops are beneficial for representatives from various veterinary college departments, including but not limited to assessment office staff, basic science faculty, academic or curricular deans, or student affairs office staff.
Faculty and staff are both encouraged to participate, as both groups play a crucial role in student success and data utilization.
VEA Data Workshops are exclusive to institutions that have adopted the VEA for use with their students. Interested schools can contact Courtney Vengrin to receive notifications about upcoming workshops.
ICVA offers two complimentary faculty reviews per school, per year (July 1-June 30), providing faculty with a deeper understanding of the assessment. These can be completed any time of the year. For more information on the VEA Faculty Review, please email mail@icva.net.
